The Original Waysiders invigorated a packed house at the Millard Fillmore Presidential Library, 3/1/19

As I arrived to the Millard Fillmore Presidential Library on Friday, March 1st, it was challenging to find my way through the crowd to find a space to call my own. The crowd was thick and the energy was palpable. While conversation was plentiful, attention was clearly focused on the band tucked into the front corner of the bar. Their music wafted through the packed space, weaving its way through the bodies and conversation with much more ease than I could manage myself.

The Original Waysiders were driving the crowd with their intoxicating mix of Americana, Blues, Folk and Bluegrass stylings. Delivering an impressive repertoire of powerful originals, pickled by the occasional cover, they drew the listener into the fold of their instrumental musings and incited inspiration for more.

This night’s performance was also the debut of their newest band member, Haley Steinhardt. Her soulful vocals entwined with the music through intricate harmonies and powerful leads. The seamless auditory cohesion on stage made it hard to believe that Steinhardt had just been introduced to The Waysiders’ extensive repertoire of original works six weeks prior to this performance.

As the second set began, the crowd in the bar had somewhat dissipated, allowing a little more space to breathe—yet the energy in the newfound space had undoubtedly multiplied. As the notes and lyrics of the initial song reached out into the audience, the connection between those playing and those listening became indisputable. Movement flowed through bodies. Hands drew together to clap with the intricate rhythms. Feet awoke, bouncing to the beat.

The harmonies stretched out into the crowd, interrupting conversations to pull your attention back to the stage. The emotion being played on the strings and chords of the instruments on stage mirrored the impact they imparted on those within your heart.

The profound musical synergy of The Original Waysiders created a night of unforgettable music at the Millard Fillmore Presidential Library. I had never experienced the venue or the band prior to that Friday night performance. I am strongly looking forward to my next foray into both.
